Art Hop Visual Artist: Marcy Peake's "Please Understand"

The Please Understand photo exhibit is an uncensored optic of the sentiments presented in the book Please Understand, by Marcy L. Peake. The book and exhibit provide eye-opening insights into the lives of socially, emotionally, and economically vulnerable children to inspire awareness and advocacy that promotes proactive change that leads to preparing instead of repairing young people.

Marcy L. Peake, MA, LPC, NCC, CFLE is a former Kalamazoo Public School Board of Education trustee; the author of the book Please Understand; and founder of Marcy Peake and Associates. She is a state of Michigan Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Family Life Educator, and a State of Michigan Great Start to Quality Trainer. Her areas of interest include advocacy for marginalized populations, working with youth and families, creating and facilitating youth development programming, and providing spaces that are anti-racist, anti-bias, and anti-oppressive. She is a counselor, consultant, trainer, and presenter for local and national conferences.

Ms. Peake is the director of diversity and community outreach initiatives in the Western Michigan University College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) and is a faculty member in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, teaching graduate and undergraduate students. She is the faculty adviser to the Student Assembly for Racial Equity and Cultural Inclusion, program coordinator for the WMU Future Educator Program that aims to increase the numbers of K-12 male teachers of color, and is the chair of the CEHD Inclusion and Diversity Committee.
