December 1863

December 1863

December may be the holiday season but Spencer makes only a fleeting reference to Christmas in the two letters he sent to his mother that month.  His letters reflect the relatively quiet winter life of Civil War soldiers. There are no major battles; at most, a few raids.

Instead he writes about the weather, picket duty, what he misses at home, and his health. McOmber’s letters primarily maintain his lifeline to his family in southwest Michigan.

The next letters for Spencer will be posted on December 19 and December 27, 2013.
