Mon. April 28, 1913

OO. I’m getting farther behind in my school work each day. It will be a marvel if I pass in everything. This P.M. Esther and I studied then I went to gymnasium class. This evening I went down to Helen’s to study but didn’t get much done. Papa came home from Menneapolis today he was certainly treated royally while he was away. I wonder if I will ever see Minneapolis? I hope so, tonight I’m sleeping with Aunt Emma as Mr. Miles has my room Rev. Barnett is here too, I think he is a grand man. I almost love him he seems so fatherly.

Tues. April 29, 1913

OO. After open Forum I cut Latin and played tennis with Elizabeth Hay against Mr. Willet and Mark Worth. We won every set But not by any brilliant playing on my part I don’t know why I can’t play like I used to its real discouraging I wish I could win the tournament. This P.M. Esther and I studied Latin all the afternoon Oh how glad I will be to finish it. Those metrical translations are too much for me. Tonight I washed my hair then went to bed. Ralph wanted to come up but I wouldn’t let him. I’m going to begin training I guess.

Kazoo-Albion Baseball game 14-10

Wed. April 30, 1913

Oh I went to the grandest game this P.M. Why I never knew that baseball could be so exciting. I yelled and yelled and yelled and blew my horn as hard as I could. Why the crowd was just tense with excitement we stood up almost all the time. The Proffessors[sic] even led the yelling Oh it was fine. We just kept up a continual racket. We won 14-10 and how we girls did hug each other and how the bell did ring! Oh it was great! MacLaurin got hit in the ear terribly I thought he was dead but he wasn’t. Elizabeth took three great big sacks of popcorn we had a fine time all right. It was funny to see Pat McEwan lead the yells. This evening I went up to the hall and studied Latin with Lydia, Gertrude, Verne and I. Oh it was a stiff lesson 84 lines of hard Odes. I haven’t my English paper written for tomorrow but I’m 5 behind already so that doesn’t worry me much.

Track meet Freshmen vs. Rest of College

Wed. April 23, 1913

OO. This P.M. Elizabeth Stetson & I went to the Track meet and it was fine. I don’t know when I ever so thoroughly enjoyed a track meet before. It was so evenly matched that part of the time we w ere ahead and part of the time the others. If we had of won in the last event the relay race we would have won the meet. We were ahead for 3 laps but on the last “Little” Walker had to be caught or he would have fallen and Bramble came in first. You see “Little” Walker was in almost every event and he was too fagged he had just jumped 19 ft 5 inches. “Jimmy” Houllouse got it on the poll vaulting he went ______. Mr. Bates got the discuss[sic] throw and we won first in ½ mile and a lot of seconds. I got several pictures I hope they are good.

Thurs. April 24, 1913

Went to school. This P.M. Esther and I skipped Hygiene and played tennis on the normal courts. Oh I will be glad if they ever get our College courts done. The men working on them work like snails. We played about 2 sets of singles and I was easily ahead. Then we played partners against a girl and boy who weren’t much good after two sets we took another court and played a couple of sets with two young boys who were fairly good players we got a set a piece. One of the boys was the younger brother of Glenn and Ruby Svoy. This evening I went to prayer meeting and stayed a few minutes to choir practice then I came home accompanied by Mr. Payne and his dog “Judge.”

Glee Club Concert.

Fri. April 25, 1913

OO. Cut German. This P.M. I took a vacation. I printed about 40 pictures then read “The Silent Battle.” This evening Rev. Miles came and is staying here over night on his way to supply at Allegan. When I came down stairs to meet him he said “I’m sorry not to have the opportunity to meet your husband.” Gene aross[sic] and said “This is Miss Wight you must have missunderstood[sic] me.” Oh it was so funny I almost flew out into the kitchen to laugh. This evening I went to the concert with Ralph and it was fine. Just funny and clever all the way through it. It was at the Academy and a fine full house. The dormitory scene at the end was great and the hold up at the end. Mr. Fergerson certainly makes a good reader. They got an awful joke on “Pat” McEwan, about preparing a banquet in hell for him. Ken Payne did some good solo work with the club for Chorus. It’s a pity Mr Piper couldn’t sing. J.B.L. Johnson took his place and it was a poor substitute. Harvey Petet is a good pianist and the whole thing was clever. Afterwards we went to Medimbers and Gertrude Muccoluc and Mr. Ricks sat with us.

Mon. April 21, 1913

OO had fine luck in my classes I didn’t get called on much. This P.M. I studied Latin with Esther until 3:30 then Elizabeth Hay and I went over to the Normal courts and played tennis. I won the sets it’s the first sets we have played this year together. 6-0 6-2 6-4 6-2. Then we went over to watch the folks playing on the Faculty court it was President Waldo and Prof. Hickey against Miss Jones and another man. Suddenly Pres. Waldo said Miss Wight will you please take my place I have to go. You can imagine how pleased I was. I was nervous at first though so they won the first set 6-4 then we got the next set 6-4 Oh it was thrilling. There is nothing like tennis for a good time. I’m so glad that I can play well enough so that the big folks like to have me with them. Papa went to Minneapolis today to speak at a convention.

Milham park by moonlight

Tues. April 22, 1913

OO. This was founders day and the Seniors marched in with their caps and gowns on, it was very impressive with Dr Stetson and Miss Hussey leading the procession then we formed a march with the faculty, Seniors, Juniors, Soph’s and Freshmen and friends and went out to the east side of the dormitory and planted the Ivy I guesss it’s the first time any class has done it Mr. Vernon delivered a speech and Elsie Kappen read a wonderful poem that she had composed. The smallpox patients gazed out of an upper window. This P.M. studied and walked down town & back with Lela. This evening Ralph came up and we took a car and walked out to Milham Park they were spearing frogs out there and had brilliant serch[sic] light or torches.

Sat. April 19, 1913

…May and Tommy and David Polaski and I played doubles at the normal courts. I can’t do anything and I think May is going to win the college tournament and Oh dear I want to win so badly. If I only could play like I did last summer I think maby[sic] I could win. Tommy and May took the 1st set 6-2 and David and I got the 2nd set 9-7. Then we came home for dinner. David has asked me to play in the college tournament with him isn’t that grand! I like him so well and he’s the best player in the college and Tommy is his equal. This P.M. May and I went back to the courts, beat a couple of boys 2 love sets then she beat me a set of singles 6-2. She can play lots better than I can now Oh I wonder if my diary will record success or failure by June ninth. Then I played Bill Fort a set of singles and he won 8-6. Then Joe Mountain & I won a set from Bill and then Bill & I lost one to Joe. This evening I’m going to bed stiff and tired and lame, with my big toe bandaged and throbbing away like an engine and none of my lessons for Mon.

Otsego by Automobile

Sun. April 20, 1913

Went to church and S.S. had 12 wigglers today. This P.M. Edna and James appeared in a new car that they are thinking of buying It’s a cheap one but good. They can’t afford an expensive one just now but they will probably be rich enough in a few years. Well they invited Ralph and I to ride back with them so we did and we went like the wind. The agent, you see, was showing off the car. The ride was fine and the roads good. Then we inspected James new officies[sic] and they are fine 3 rooms and the newest office furniture. He will have 10 in the office by tomorrow. I guess Ralph was dully impressed. Then we went up to the house and had lunch Ardith is so sweet! I took her picture. Came home on the train.

Wed. April 16, 1913

OO this P.M. after a short Thalia practice I came home to study till the game. Then I went with Betty Stetson and Esther, I wouldn’t go with Ralph which made him quite pervoke[sic] but I can have more fun with a bunch of girls at a game. Everyone was surprised and happy over the ease with which K.C. ran up the score Oh it was great!

I believe we have a championship team and the freshmen did finely. Mr. Bates made a home run and several 2 baggers. Mr. Knappen let 3 men in and ran around 2 or 3 times. Mr. Zeedyke did good work on 3rd and Maclaurin pitched for a while in “Curly” Brambles place and put men out easy as pie This evening Esther came up and we tried to do Latin.

First outdoor tennis!

Thur. April 17, 1913

OO. This P.M. I took my kodak over to school and took a roll of pictures Oh! I hope they are good. One of Dr. Stetson and one of Bowen Hall. One of Bessie, Mary Barnett & Francis Barnett around a poll[sic] and one of “Jimmy” Houloose. One of Mr. Chapman and one of Bessie & Jimmy. After writing a “fake” Hygiene paper I went up with Francis Haskell to Humphrey’s tennis court and played the first set of the year which I won 6-4. I’m all out of practice I wonder if I will be any good at all this year. This evening I went to Prayer meeting and Ralph came for me we walked home, got a soda and the moon was so bright that we sat down in our “perch” for a while.

Fri. April 18, 1913

OO. This P.M. went down to the library to find my poem for Kappa Pi tonight I had “Robert of Lincoln” Bryant and so I took a picture of the bird up to K.P. told a little sketch of the birds life and read the poem. I got along nicely with it and wasn’t afraid. Ralph and I took Esther home as Mr. Bates didn’t come out tonight he’s most laid up with a lame arm.

Walked to Galesburg.

Sun. April 13, 1913

This has been a perfectly beautiful day. The sun has shone and it was just cold enough to be plesant[sic] walking. This P.M. Ralph came up and we took the Main St. Car and went to the end of the line then we walked and walked and walked some more. It was a ten mile walk to say the least and it said 13 m. on the railroad track we got to Galesburg by turning South 3 mi. We saw many beautiful things clouds, birds, lakes, marshes etc. We found a deserted house which we inspected and I took a little piece of wall paper from it for my memory book. We rode home on the Interuban and after getting an “egg chocolate” to refresh ourselves we went to church then walked home

Mon. April 14, 1913

OO This P.M. I studied Latin with Esther quite unsuccessfully for two or three hrs. then I went to gymnasium class and practiced tennis in the gymnasium. My I will be glad when we can play outdoors. This evening I have been disparately[sic] trying to write a metrical translation of one of Horaces odes in “Alcaic Strophe” and it’s the hardest most fascinating thing I believe I ever did its eleven 30 now and my brain refuses to work so I’m going to bed with only 3 paragraphs written.

Tues. April 15, 1913

OO. Ralph lost in the Index election this morning I guess it was quite a blow to him though of course he wont admit it. This P.M. Esther and I studied faithfully all the time after the first few minutes. Helen came back today poor girl she’s having such a time with her vaccination it looks horrible. This evening Ralph came up but we didn’t do much of anything. We took a little walk I wonder if it isn’t right to take walks in the evening with boys? Papa doesn’t think it’s proper but all the boys and girls that I know do it.

OO. This afternoon I felt so queer. Sort of sick and add and all of a sudden right while I was studing[sic] with Esther & Helen I began to cry! And tonight I went to Prayer Meeting with Helen we walked over and on our way home I saw Ralph walking down towards the Church, on the opposite side of the street. We went on by without saying a word and came on home we had a fine talk but just as we got to Helen’s house, Ralph came rushing up so he had caught up with me. Then we bade Helen a goodnight and took a little walk up on some high Hills and the wind blew so hard it just made me feel good. But I’m so nervous I just jump at every little noise. It’s my vaccination that’s making me this way, and I’m never going to be vaccinated again!

Fri. April 11, 1913

OO This P.M. I went over to Gymnasium and practiced a little tennis I will be glad to get out on the courts. Then Esther & I wanted to do something different so we took 5 cents and bought some of those all day suckers that are fastened on the end of sticks and came up the street sucking the tissue paper off. I guess everyone was shocked allright including Edith Bailey and Hazel Shaw who we called across the street to have a lick off our suckers. I laughed and laughed. This evening I went to the joint meeting of the Century Forum’s and Kappa Pi’s it was a funny debated on the question Resolved that Kazoo College should make an endowment of $25 for a pest house. We had lime ice cream and maccarones[sic]

Mon. April 7, 1913

OO. Got my ticket from the health officier[sic] and went to classes. This P.M. I studied Latin mostly. I flunked in it again this morning I know I wont get through and its very discouraging I get my lessons as well as the rest but I can’t recite them. This evening I went to Thalia practice and now its after eleven and I’ve been reading German till I’m dead tired.

Tues. April 8, 1913

OO this P.M. I studied first latin with Helen then German with Edwina McGlannon. That took all the afternoon. Then I practiced the stunt with the Thalia girls. I guess I’m not going to sing with them. They are going to have Katherine Clark because she has a stronger voice than either May or I and the alto’s are too heavy for May and I alone. I want to drop out of it all but the girls wont let me. This evening Mr. Parker came up and we studied then talked. I was certainly surprised to have him want to come up after what I handed him the other night. Well ths is a queer world anyway. Ralph called up after he came and wanted me to go somewhere with him. Poor Boy I guess it was kind of a blow to him that I wouldn’t go Oh I wish somebody grand would come along that I could go with if I’ve got to go with someone. Mr. P is writing a story that he is going to let me read.

Wed. April 9, 1913

OO This P.M. I went to Thalia Club practice. I tried to get out of the Club but the girls made such a fuss that I couldn’t. Then I came home and Esther Helen and I studied. This evening I wrote a letter to Ben. Wheatley and now I’m going to bed without getting my English. I don’t think Mr. Parkers story is anything wonderful so far but he hasn’t finished it yet.

Thur. April 3, 1913

Small Pox in the college! Mr Piper came down with it in the mens dormitory yesterday. We’ve all got to be vaccinated or leave school Oh Dear!!! This P.M. I slept a long while then went to Gaynor practice. I’ve just come home now from an executive committee meeting at Bessie Freeman’s and I’ve had a fine time. We talked over plans for the rest of the year, decided to give play commencement week and oh lots of things. Oh I hope we can go to South Haven for our Freshman-Sophmore[sic] party! “Jimmy” our president came home with me and Oh I like him lots better than I did even. We talked far more seriously than I ever did with any boy on the first time being with them that way and it seemed so good to discuss religion and big questions so openly. He certainly has big noble thoughts and aspirations. It is a rest to be frank and friendly with a boy and not to be misunderstood. Well goodnight diary its after 12.

Fri. April 4, 1913

Went to school. Recited my declamation to Miss Hussey for the first time I got along very well. This P.M. Esther and I went down to Dr. Cornell’s and got vaccinated it wasn’t a very bad operation I don’t see why people fuss so about it. I only hope I’m not sick. This evening we went to K.P. and I’ve decided to enter the “New Girls Contest.” Came home with Ralph.

Sat. April 5, 1913

Went to school. Got my German note book in on time which is quite exceptional. This P.M. I worked Math then went to Thalia Club practice. Miss Hussey was there to train us. I’m kind of disgusted with it all now. I fairly got cross. This evening I studied a little while but I was so sleepy that I’ve got to go to bed.

Sun. April 6, 1913

Went to church & S.S. I had Lela teach the boys again today. My vaccinaton has begun to work and I am nearly frantic with the itching. This P.M. I read then Ralph and I went walking found a camp fire in a woods so sat down by it and talked. Then we hurried to church and we only a little late after we got home we ate lunch and then got interested in writting[sic] a speech for me to say as “Miss Perkins the Dean” in the gypsie camp. It was lots of fun but we didn’t finish it till most 12:00 o’clock. Won’t the girls be surprised when I say it tomorrow night.

Mon. March 31, 1913

I worked when I got home and this P.M. I wrote on my book report until four o’clock then I went for a walk with Helen and Elizabeth we went to visit a farm that was for sale out East Main St. We took a 3 mile walk I guess it was a dear little new 5 room house and I liked the 10 acres very much but they asked $3000 for it and that’s too much. This evening I visited with Helen a while and then Ralph called up and wanted to go walking so he and I took a long walk out the B.R. track it was a fine evening and I enjoyed the evening and his company for once. Boys are such queer things I wonder what they really do think and feel.
