IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System

IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System

For Grade 8l and up
27 minutes

Join two teenagers as they discuss our solar system, the influence of the Sun, the motion of galaxies, and the possible findings of IBEX, the Interstellar Boundary Explorer, which is being used to map the furthest reaches of our solar system. Here, a protective bubble called the heliosphere may prevent high-energy particles traveling through the interstellar medium from reaching Earth or causing mass extinctions. This show follows NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) and illustrates the technology used to launch it in 2008 from a remote Pacific island. Audiences will get an in-depth look at the mission and how IBEX is collecting high-speed atoms that cannot be measured by conventional telescopes to create a map of the outer reaches of our solar system's boundary.
